The Elements of Style
Answer
The Elements of Style
The style guide credited to William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White is The Elements of Style.
William Strunk Jr. originally wrote the guide in 1918 while teaching at Cornell University. A commercially published version appeared in 1920, presenting concise advice on grammar, punctuation, composition, and word choice. Its compact rules included the famous recommendation to “omit needless words.”
Writer E. B. White, who had been Strunk’s student, revised and expanded the book for a 1959 edition. That version introduced a wider readership to what became popularly known as “Strunk & White.” White added explanatory material and a personal introduction, while retaining the book’s emphasis on clarity, economy, and disciplined sentence construction.
The title is sometimes confused with The Chicago Manual of Style or Garner’s Modern English Usage. Those are different reference works: Chicago is a broad publishing style manual, while Garner’s book is a detailed usage guide. The Elements of Style is especially associated with short, memorable prescriptions for effective American English prose.
