Retro Studios co-developed Mario Kart 7 with Nintendo EAD. Nintendo brought the Texas-based studio into the project late in development to help finish the Nintendo 3DS game in time for the 2011 holiday season.

Retro Studios had recently completed Donkey Kong Country Returns, another Nintendo-published title. Its Mario Kart 7 work focused especially on the game’s retro courses—remakes of tracks from earlier Mario Kart games.
