Which structure was completed in Paris for the 1889 World’s Fair?

The story behind the answer

The Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris for the 1889 World’s Fair.

The tower was built to serve as the entrance arch and centerpiece of the Exposition Universelle, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Engineer Gustave Eiffel’s company designed and constructed the iron lattice structure, while Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier produced the original engineering concept.

Construction began in 1887 and finished in 1889. At approximately 300 meters, the tower was then the tallest human-made structure in the world, surpassing the Washington Monument. It remained the tallest until New York’s Chrysler Building exceeded it in 1930.

Many Paris artists and intellectuals initially criticized the design, but the tower became popular with visitors. It was intended to be temporary, yet its usefulness for radio transmission helped preserve it. Today it is one of France’s best-known landmarks and a major symbol of Paris.
