Which Street Fighter game introduced the Super Combo gauge?

The story behind the answer

Super Street Fighter II Turbo introduced the Super Combo gauge. Released in arcades in 1994, it added a meter that filled as players attacked and defended, allowing them to unleash powerful multi-hit Super Combos once enough energy had accumulated.

The gauge was part of Super Turbo's effort to expand Street Fighter II's combat system beyond the mechanics of the earlier releases. The game also introduced adjustable speed settings and air combos, giving experienced players more control over match pace and advanced offense.

The wording can cause confusion because later Street Fighter games made Super meters more elaborate, adding features such as EX moves, multiple stocks, and Ultra meters. However, the original Super Combo meter—and the first Street Fighter II game to use it—belongs specifically to Super Street Fighter II Turbo, the fifth major arcade version of Street Fighter II.

Super Turbo also introduced Akuma as a hidden character, making it one of the most influential updates in the series.
