Which streaming service released 'Stranger Things' in 2016?

The story behind the answer

Netflix released Stranger Things in 2016.

The science-fiction horror series premiered worldwide on Netflix on July 15, 2016. Created by twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, it follows a group of children in the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins after their friend Will Byers disappears. The story soon expands into secret experiments, a parallel dimension called the Upside Down, and a mysterious girl known as Eleven.

Netflix’s release model helped the show become an immediate binge-watching phenomenon. Instead of airing one episode each week, the service made all eight first-season episodes available at once. The series drew heavily on 1980s popular culture, including adventure films, horror, arcade games, synthesizer music, and the work of writers such as Stephen King.

A common mix-up is the show’s setting versus its release date: Stranger Things is set mainly in the 1980s, but its first season arrived in 2016. Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu were not the original home of the series. Netflix commissioned and distributed the program as a Netflix original, later releasing additional seasons through the same service.
