Which streaming service produces The Handmaid's Tale? Hulu produces the series. The dystopian drama was developed as a Hulu original and premiered on the platform in April 2017.
The series was created by Bruce Miller and adapted from Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel. MGM Television produces the show, while Hulu commissioned and distributes it in the United States. That distinction can cause confusion: MGM is the production company, but Hulu is the streaming service associated with the series.
The Handmaid's Tale became one of Hulu's landmark original programs. Its first season won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2017, making it the first series from a streaming service to win that award. Elisabeth Moss stars as June Osborne, also known by her Gilead name, Offred.
Availability differs internationally. Other broadcasters and platforms have carried the show in certain countries, but Hulu remains its original U.S. home and commissioning service.
