Tidal first carried Beyoncé’s Lemonade online.
Beyoncé released Lemonade as a surprise visual album on April 23, 2016, alongside the premiere of its hour-long film on HBO. The album was initially available for online streaming exclusively through Tidal, the subscription service associated with Jay-Z and partly owned by Beyoncé. That exclusivity made the platform central to the album’s launch.
The release was more than a conventional record debut. Lemonade combined 12 songs with a visual film and spoken poetry, creating a continuous work about betrayal, grief, anger, heritage, reconciliation, and self-definition. Its first streaming window also helped generate enormous attention for Tidal at a time when Apple Music and Spotify were the dominant competitors.
A common mix-up is confusing streaming with downloading. Lemonade became available for digital purchase through iTunes shortly after its Tidal debut, but that did not make Apple Music its first streaming home. The album later arrived on other major streaming services in 2019, marking the end of its long exclusivity period.
