Which strait separates the European country of Spain from Morocco in Africa?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain in Europe from Morocco in Africa.

The strait links the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. At its narrowest point, between Point Marroqui near Tarifa and Point Cires in Morocco, the distance is about 14 kilometres. Its position made it a crucial maritime gateway between two major bodies of water and two continents.

The Rock of Gibraltar stands on the northern side, in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. The southern shore includes the Moroccan port of Tangier and the Spanish-controlled city of Ceuta nearby. Strong winds, currents, and heavy shipping traffic make navigation significant in the area.

The strait also has ecological importance. It is a major route for migrating birds and for marine animals moving between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Deep water flows into the Mediterranean from the Atlantic near the surface, while denser Mediterranean water flows outward at depth, helping balance the basin’s water budget.
