Which strait separates the continents of Europe and Africa at Spain and Morocco?
Answer
The Strait of Gibraltar
Answer
The Strait of Gibraltar
The Strait of Gibraltar separates Europe and Africa between southern Spain and northern Morocco.
The strait connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the world’s most important maritime gateways. Its narrowest point is about 14 kilometers wide, making the European and African continents visibly close to one another from the surrounding shores.
The northern side includes Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar. The southern side includes the Moroccan port area near Tangier. The strait’s position has made it strategically important since ancient times, when it was associated with the Pillars of Hercules.
Water circulation through the strait is unusual. Dense, salty Mediterranean water flows westward at depth, while comparatively fresher Atlantic water enters near the surface. The gateway also affects the Mediterranean’s climate, ecology, and connection to global ocean circulation. Its name comes from Jabal Tariq, “Mountain of Tariq,” honoring the commander Tariq ibn Ziyad.
