Which strait separates the Asian and North American continents?

The story behind the answer

The Bering Strait separates the Asian and North American continents.

It lies between Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula and Alaska’s Seward Peninsula, connecting the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean’s Bering Sea. At its narrowest point, the strait is about 85 kilometres wide, although the two Diomede Islands sit between the continents near its center.

The International Date Line passes between the Diomede Islands. Big Diomede belongs to Russia, while Little Diomede belongs to the United States, so the islands are sometimes nicknamed the “Tomorrow Island” and “Yesterday Island.”

During periods of lower sea level in the Ice Age, a land bridge known as Beringia connected Asia and North America. Many scientists link this region to the movements of ancestral peoples into the Americas, although the timing and routes remain subjects of research.
