Which strait separates Spain from Morocco?

The story behind the answer

The strait separating Spain from Morocco is the Strait of Gibraltar.

This narrow waterway connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and separates Europe from Africa. Spain and Gibraltar lie on its northern side, while Morocco and the Spanish city of Ceuta lie on the southern side. At its narrowest point, the two continents are only about 14.2 kilometers apart.

The strait has been a major maritime gateway for thousands of years. Ancient writers called the surrounding landmarks the Pillars of Hercules, traditionally identified with the Rock of Gibraltar and Jebel Musa. The modern name comes through Arabic from Tariq ibn Ziyad, the commander whose forces crossed into Iberia in 711.

The Strait of Gibraltar is also an important migration corridor for birds and marine animals, as well as a busy shipping route. It is sometimes confused with the Bosporus, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and separates European and Asian parts of Turkey. The Strait of Hormuz, by contrast, links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
