Which strait separates eastern Russia from western Alaska?
Answer
Bering Strait
Answer
Bering Strait
The Bering Strait separates eastern Russia from western Alaska.
The strait connects the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean’s Bering Sea. At its narrowest point, it is about 82 kilometres wide between the Russian Chukchi Peninsula and Alaska’s Seward Peninsula. The Diomede Islands lie in the middle of the strait: Big Diomede belongs to Russia, while Little Diomede belongs to the United States.
The strait is named after Danish-born Russian explorer Vitus Bering, whose expedition sailed through the region in 1728. During the last Ice Age, lower sea levels exposed a land bridge called Beringia, which connected Asia and North America and played an important role in human migration. The International Date Line passes between the Diomede Islands, so the nearby islands are sometimes called Tomorrow Island and Yesterday Isle. Despite their small distance, they are nearly a day apart by calendar date.
