Which strait separates Asia from North America at Russia’s easternmost region?
Answer
Bering Strait
Answer
Bering Strait
The Bering Strait separates Asia from North America between Russia and the United States. It connects the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean’s Bering Sea and is about 85 kilometres wide at its narrowest point.
Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula lies west of the strait, while Alaska’s Seward Peninsula lies east. The Diomede Islands sit near its middle: Big Diomede belongs to Russia, and Little Diomede belongs to the United States. The international boundary passes between them.
During ice ages, lower sea levels exposed Beringia, a broad land region that connected Siberia and Alaska. Archaeological and genetic evidence links this region to the movement of ancient peoples into the Americas, although the timing and routes remain subjects of research. The strait is named after Vitus Bering, a Danish-born explorer who served the Russian Empire and sailed through the region in 1728.
