Which strait lies between Greenland and Canada's Baffin Island?

The story behind the answer

The Davis Strait lies between Greenland and Canada’s Baffin Island.

It is a broad stretch of water in the Arctic–North Atlantic region, situated north of the Labrador Sea. Greenland forms its eastern boundary, while Baffin Island and the Canadian Arctic lie to the west. Baffin Bay is to the north, and the Labrador Sea begins to the south.

The strait is named after the English navigator John Davis, who explored the region in the late sixteenth century while searching for a Northwest Passage to Asia. By the seventeenth century, European whalers were using the waters of the Davis Strait, despite its difficult conditions and powerful tides.

Davis Strait is often confused with Hudson Strait, which separates Baffin Island from mainland Labrador and provides access to Hudson Bay. Nares Strait is farther north, between Greenland and Ellesmere Island. Denmark Strait, meanwhile, separates Greenland from Iceland rather than from Canada.
