Which strait is a major shipping route between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Malacca is a major shipping route between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

It lies between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, connecting the Andaman Sea with the Singapore Strait and the South China Sea. Its position makes it a critical route for vessels travelling between the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia and Europe.

The strait is one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. Large volumes of petroleum, manufactured goods, bulk commodities and containerised cargo pass through it. Singapore’s location at the strait’s eastern end helped it develop into a leading trans-shipment and maritime services centre.

The Strait of Hormuz is a different strategic waterway at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The Bosporus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, while the Bering Strait separates Russia and Alaska.
