Which strait connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean at southern Chile?
Answer
Strait of Magellan
Answer
Strait of Magellan
The Strait of Magellan connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at southern Chile.
The passage runs through the southern end of mainland South America and the islands of Tierra del Fuego. It is about 570 kilometres long and is entirely within Chilean territory. The strait provides a sheltered route compared with sailing around Cape Horn, although strong winds, currents, narrow channels, and unpredictable weather can make navigation difficult.
The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan reached the passage in 1520 during the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth. The expedition entered the strait in October and emerged into the ocean that Magellan named the “Peaceful Sea,” later known as the Pacific Ocean.
The Panama Canal later became the faster route for many vessels traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific. The Strait of Magellan remains an important geographic landmark and a historic route for ships and explorers.
