Which stone, found in Egypt in 1799, helped scholars decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs?
Answer
Rosetta Stone
Answer
Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone helped scholars decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs after French soldiers found it near Rashid, or Rosetta, in Egypt in 1799. Its inscription presents the same decree in three scripts.
The text uses Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic Egyptian and Ancient Greek. Because scholars could read Ancient Greek, the parallel versions provided a key for understanding the previously undeciphered hieroglyphic script.
Jean-François Champollion announced a major breakthrough in decipherment in 1822. The stone is made of granodiorite and is now displayed at the British Museum in London, where it remains one of the museum's best-known objects.
