Which stock-market index reached 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000, at the peak of the dot-com bubble?

The story behind the answer

The NASDAQ Composite reached 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000, at the peak of the dot-com bubble.

The index was especially associated with technology and internet companies, many of which attracted extraordinary valuations despite having little revenue or no profits. Investors bought shares in expectation that rapid internet growth would eventually justify the prices.

After the March 2000 peak, the technology-heavy market reversed. The collapse continued through 2001 and 2002 as speculative companies failed, earnings disappointed, and investors reassessed the value of businesses built around internet expansion. The NASDAQ Composite eventually fell roughly 78% from its peak to its October 2002 low.

The index is sometimes confused with the NASDAQ stock exchange itself. The NASDAQ Composite is a market index tracking thousands of securities listed on that exchange, while the exchange is the trading marketplace. The later NASDAQ-100 is a different index with a narrower selection of large non-financial companies.
