Which Stevie Wonder album contains the instrumental “Contusion”?

The story behind the answer

Stevie Wonder’s album Songs in the Key of Life contains the instrumental “Contusion.”

Released in 1976, Songs in the Key of Life is one of Wonder’s most ambitious studio projects. “Contusion” is an instrumental built around jazz-fusion ideas, with prominent electric piano, synthesizer, guitar and rhythm-section interplay. Its title refers to a bruise, but the track itself has no sung lyrics explaining the word.

The album also includes major songs such as “Sir Duke,” “I Wish,” “Isn’t She Lovely” and “As.” Because the record is so large and varied, listeners sometimes remember its famous vocal singles while overlooking instrumental pieces such as “Contusion.”

Songs in the Key of Life won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and is frequently ranked among the defining albums of the 1970s. It was issued as a two-LP set with an additional short record.
