Stephen King’s novel featuring the writer Paul Sheldon is Misery.
Paul Sheldon is a successful novelist best known for a series of historical romance books about a character named Misery Chastain. At the beginning of the novel, Paul has completed a new manuscript and has also written what he intends to be the final Misery book. He is injured in a snowstorm-related car crash and rescued by Annie Wilkes, a former nurse and devoted reader.
Annie calls herself Paul’s “number one fan,” but her admiration quickly becomes terrifying. She discovers that he has killed off Misery and forces him to write a new story bringing the character back. Paul’s imprisonment turns the novel into a claustrophobic psychological thriller about obsession, control, pain, and the uneasy relationship between an author and his audience.
Misery was first published in 1987 and was later adapted into a major 1990 film directed by Rob Reiner. The film’s portrayal of Annie Wilkes earned Kathy Bates an Academy Award for Best Actress, while Paul was played by James Caan.
