Which steam locomotive was stolen in the Great Locomotive Chase?
Answer
The General
Answer
The General
The General was the steam locomotive stolen in the Great Locomotive Chase.
On April 12, 1862, Union volunteers led by James J. Andrews commandeered Western & Atlantic Railroad locomotive No. 3, known as The General, near Big Shanty, Georgia. Their goal was to damage the Confederate railway connection between Atlanta and Chattanooga during the American Civil War. The raiders cut telegraph wires and damaged track while heading north.
Western & Atlantic conductor William Fuller pursued them first on foot and by handcar. He eventually obtained another locomotive, The Texas, and chased The General in reverse because the engine could not be turned around. The raiders ran short of fuel and water and abandoned The General near Ringgold.
The General survived and is preserved at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Texas was the pursuing locomotive, not the stolen one; Yonah was also involved earlier in the pursuit. The episode is also called Andrews’ Raid.
