Which stadium hosted the 2021 Copa América final where Messi won his first title?

The story behind the answer

The 2021 Copa América final was hosted at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Argentina defeated Brazil 1–0 there on 10 July 2021, giving Messi his first senior international title with Argentina.

The match’s only goal came in the 22nd minute. Ángel Di María controlled Rodrigo De Paul’s long pass and lifted the ball over Brazil goalkeeper Ederson. Argentina protected the lead for the rest of the match, despite Brazil having more possession and creating late pressure.

The final was originally expected to be staged elsewhere because the tournament’s hosting plans changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Colombia was removed as a co-host, Argentina withdrew as host, and Brazil took over at short notice. The Maracanã, one of football’s most famous stadiums, was selected for the final.

Messi did not score in the final, but he was named the tournament’s best player and shared the Golden Boot with Luis Díaz. Argentina’s victory ended a 28-year wait for a major senior men’s international trophy.
