Which sport returned to the Olympic program in 2016 after a 112-year absence?

The story behind the answer

Which sport returned to the Olympic program in 2016 after a 112-year absence? Golf.

Golf first appeared at the modern Olympics in Paris in 1900 and returned at St. Louis in 1904. It then disappeared from the program until Rio de Janeiro hosted the sport again in 2016, making the gap 112 years.

The Rio competition used separate men's and women's individual 72-hole stroke-play tournaments. The men's event was won by Great Britain's Justin Rose, while South Korea's Inbee Park won the women's gold medal. Both tournaments were played at the purpose-built Olympic Golf Course in Barra da Tijuca.

A common mix-up is rugby sevens, which also debuted at Rio 2016 after rugby union's long Olympic absence, but it had not been away for 112 years. Baseball and softball returned in Tokyo in 2021, not Rio. Golf was approved for reinstatement by the IOC in 2009, initially for the 2016 and 2020 Games.
