Which spice is known as 'jeera' in Hindi?

The story behind the answer

Which spice is known as 'jeera' in Hindi? Cumin is the answer.

Jeera is the common Hindi name for cumin, the dried seed of the plant Cuminum cyminum. Cumin has a warm, earthy aroma and a slightly bitter, nutty flavor, making it one of the most frequently used spices in Indian cooking.

Cumin seeds may be fried in hot oil or ghee at the beginning of cooking. This tempering process releases their essential oils and flavors dishes such as dals, vegetable curries, rice, and spice blends. Ground cumin is also used in masalas and drinks such as jaljeera.

The word is also spelled zeera, particularly in Urdu and in names such as jeera rice or zeera chawal. Cumin is sometimes confused with caraway or fennel because the seeds look similar, but their aromas and flavors differ. Coriander is another common Indian spice, yet it comes from a different plant and is not jeera.
