Which species of ray has the largest wingspan?

The story behind the answer

The giant manta ray has the largest wingspan of any ray species. Also called the giant oceanic manta ray, it is scientifically known as Mobula birostris and is the largest member of the ray group.

Its broad, triangular pectoral fins can span about 7 metres, while exceptional individuals may reach roughly 9 metres in total length and weigh around 3,000 kilograms. The species uses its forward-facing mouth and distinctive cephalic fins to funnel plankton-rich water toward its gills while feeding.

A common mix-up is confusing manta rays with stingrays. Manta rays are close relatives of devil rays, but they lack the venomous tail spine associated with many stingrays. The giant manta is generally found in tropical and subtropical oceans, although it can also enter temperate waters.

The species was formerly placed in the genus Manta. Genetic research led scientists to move it into Mobula, alongside devil rays, in the modern classification.
