Salvador Dalí was born in Catalonia.
He was born in Figueres, a city in the province of Girona in northeastern Spain. Catalonia’s language, landscapes, traditions, and coastal geography remained important reference points throughout his life. Dalí also maintained a close connection with the nearby fishing village of Cadaqués and the cove of Portlligat, where he established his home and studio.
Dalí is sometimes broadly labelled a Spanish artist without mention of his Catalan identity. That description is nationally correct but leaves out an important regional context. Andalusia is another Spanish region with a strong artistic history, but it was not Dalí’s birthplace. His work and public persona frequently incorporated Catalan symbols and references.
