Which Spanish king granted Salvador Dalí the title Marqués de Dalí de Púbol?

The story behind the answer

King Juan Carlos I granted Salvador Dalí the title Marqués de Dalí de Púbol.

The Spanish monarch bestowed the hereditary title on Dalí in 1982. It recognized the artist’s international stature and his contribution to Spanish culture. Dalí accepted the title and used the name Marqués de Dalí de Púbol in the final years of his life.

Púbol refers to the medieval castle in Catalonia that Dalí gave to Gala. He decorated the castle for her and agreed to visit only by invitation, turning it into a highly personal retreat. The title therefore connected Dalí’s public honor with a place central to his private mythology.

Dalí’s title was not the name of an artwork or an honorary nickname. It was a Spanish noble title created specifically for him. He died in 1989, and the title became extinct because he left no surviving children.
