Which Spanish fashion designer founded the Balenciaga fashion house in San Sebastián in 1919?

The story behind the answer

Cristóbal Balenciaga founded the Balenciaga fashion house in San Sebastián in 1919.

Balenciaga began his career in Spain, opening a fashion business that served Spanish aristocratic and royal clients. He later established houses in Madrid and Barcelona before moving his main operation to Paris in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.

His Paris collections made him one of the most respected designers of the 20th century. Balenciaga was known for precise construction, sculptural silhouettes, and innovative shapes such as cocoon coats, balloon-like volumes, and loose tunics. Christian Dior famously described him as “the master of us all,” emphasizing Balenciaga’s technical authority among his peers.

Balenciaga retired in 1968 and died in 1972. The modern Balenciaga label uses his name, but its later designs and creative leadership belong to a different era from the founder’s mid-century couture work.
