Which Spanish castle did Salvador Dalí give to Gala as a private retreat?
Answer
Púbol Castle
Answer
Púbol Castle
Salvador Dalí gave Púbol Castle to Gala as a private retreat.
Púbol Castle is a medieval building in the village of Púbol in Catalonia. Dalí purchased it for Gala in the early 1970s and transformed the interior with paintings, furniture, textiles, and carefully staged decorative details. The castle became a highly personal space associated with Gala rather than a conventional shared residence.
Dalí had promised Gala that he would provide her with a castle, and Púbol fulfilled that promise. Gala accepted visitors there according to her own arrangements, while Dalí generally visited by invitation. The setting contributed to the couple’s elaborate public mythology and private rituals.
Gala died at Púbol in 1982 and was buried in the castle’s chapel. Dalí later lived mainly at Púbol after her death, before moving to Figueres. The castle is now part of the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation’s museum network, together with Portlligat and the Dalí Theatre-Museum.
