Answer
Francisco Goya
Which Spanish artist created the “Black Paintings”? Francisco Goya created them.
The Black Paintings are a group of 14 disturbing murals painted roughly between 1820 and 1823, late in Goya’s life. He painted them directly onto the plaster walls of his home near Madrid, the Quinta del Sordo, or “House of the Deaf Man.” Their dark subjects include Saturn Devouring His Son, Witches’ Sabbath, The Dog, and Fight with Cudgels.
The works were private and untitled during Goya’s lifetime; art historians later supplied most of the familiar names. Their bleak imagery is often connected to Goya’s deafness, illness, political disillusionment, and memories of war and repression. This is why they are frequently treated as a landmark of Romanticism and a precursor to modern art.
The murals were removed from the house in the 1870s and transferred to canvas. They are now preserved at Madrid’s Museo del Prado. Although one scholar questioned their attribution, the Prado recognizes them as authentic Goya works.
