Voyager 1 is the farthest human-made object from Earth; NASA launched it in 1977.
The spacecraft launched on 5 September 1977, shortly after its twin Voyager 2. A favorable planetary alignment allowed Voyager 1 to visit Jupiter and Saturn. It returned detailed images of both planets and their moons, including discoveries about active volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io and complex atmospheric features on Saturn.
Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause in 2012, becoming the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space. This boundary marks the region where the Sun’s solar-wind bubble gives way to the surrounding interstellar medium. The spacecraft still communicates with Earth, although its power and instruments have steadily declined.
Voyager 2 followed a different trajectory, visiting all four giant planets. New Horizons also traveled beyond Pluto, but it is not as far from Earth as Voyager 1.
