Which spacecraft carried the first person to perform a spacewalk?
Answer
Voskhod 2
Answer
Voskhod 2
Voskhod 2 carried Alexey Leonov, the first person to perform a spacewalk.
The Soviet spacecraft launched on March 18, 1965, with Leonov and commander Pavel Belyayev aboard. Voskhod 2 included an inflatable airlock, allowing Leonov to leave the cabin without depressurizing the entire spacecraft.
Leonov spent about 12 minutes outside, but his suit expanded in the vacuum and made it difficult to re-enter. He had to lower the suit pressure and enter the airlock headfirst. The crew then faced an automatic-control failure, a difficult manual re-entry, and a landing far from the planned recovery zone.
Gemini 4’s Ed White performed the first American spacewalk in June 1965. Voskhod 2’s mission remains significant because it combined a new spacecraft design with the first human work outside a spacecraft.
