Which spacecraft carried the first humans to land on the Moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission?
Answer
Lunar Module Eagle
Answer
Lunar Module Eagle
The Lunar Module Eagle carried the first humans to land on the Moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission.
Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center on 16 July 1969 with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The mission’s command module was named Columbia, while its lunar module was named Eagle. Armstrong and Aldrin flew Eagle from lunar orbit to the surface; Collins remained in Columbia in orbit.
Eagle landed in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility on 20 July 1969. Armstrong stepped onto the surface first, followed by Aldrin, while the astronauts collected samples, deployed scientific instruments, and photographed the terrain. The lunar module’s ascent stage later returned them to lunar orbit for rendezvous with Columbia.
Apollo 11 returned safely to Earth on 24 July 1969. The mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal of landing humans on the Moon and returning them safely before the decade ended. The name Eagle became symbolic because the bird appears on the United States national seal.
