Which spacecraft carried the first American woman into space in 1983?

The story behind the answer

Challenger carried the first American woman into space in 1983.

NASA astronaut Sally Ride flew aboard Space Shuttle Challenger during mission STS-7, launched on 18 June 1983. She became the first American woman in space, following Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s earlier 1963 milestone.

STS-7 deployed two communications satellites and carried the first Shuttle Pallet Satellite. The mission lasted just under six days and landed at Edwards Air Force Base.

Challenger was NASA’s second operational shuttle and flew ten missions before being lost during launch in 1986. The later shuttle Discovery carried several other major missions, but it did not carry Sally Ride’s historic first flight.
