Which space telescope launched in 1990 and produced famous deep-field images of distant galaxies?

The story behind the answer

The Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 and produced famous deep-field images of distant galaxies.

Hubble was launched aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April 1990 and placed in low Earth orbit. It is a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency. Because it observes above Earth’s atmosphere, it can obtain exceptionally sharp images at visible, ultraviolet and some infrared wavelengths.

A flaw in Hubble’s primary mirror initially caused spherical aberration, leaving its images blurred. Astronauts corrected the problem during the 1993 servicing mission by installing corrective optics and upgraded instruments. Later shuttle missions replaced instruments, computers and other components, extending the telescope’s scientific life.

The Hubble Deep Field, released in 1996, was made by pointing the telescope at a seemingly empty patch of sky for many hours. The resulting image revealed thousands of galaxies at different distances and stages of development. Hubble helped measure the expansion of the universe, study stellar birth and death, and refine estimates of the universe’s age. The James Webb Space Telescope is newer and specializes more strongly in infrared observations.
