Which Soviet lieutenant general signed Japan’s surrender instrument in Tokyo Bay in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Soviet Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko signed Japan’s surrender instrument in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

Derevyanko represented the Soviet Union at the ceremony aboard USS Missouri. He signed at approximately 9:16 a.m., after representatives of the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. His signature reflected the Soviet Union’s participation in the Allied victory over Japan after Soviet forces entered the war against Japan in August 1945.

Derevyanko had developed strong Japanese-language skills earlier in his military career. After the surrender, he represented the Soviet Union at General MacArthur’s headquarters during the occupation of Japan. He also visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki and prepared reports about the destruction caused by the atomic bombings.
