Which Soviet general signed Japan’s surrender instrument on behalf of the USSR?

The story behind the answer

Kuzma Derevyanko signed Japan’s surrender instrument on behalf of the Soviet Union.

Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko signed aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He represented the USSR at approximately 9:16 a.m., after the American, Chinese, and British representatives had signed.

Derevyanko was a Soviet military officer who had served in several major operations during World War II. His participation reflected the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan in August 1945 and its subsequent campaign in northeastern Asia.

The name is often confused with better-known Soviet commanders such as Georgy Zhukov or Ivan Konev. Neither signed Japan’s surrender instrument. Derevyanko’s role was specifically diplomatic and ceremonial at the Tokyo Bay surrender.
