Which South Carolina city is listed as an America250 leading city?

The story behind the answer

Charleston is the South Carolina city listed as an America250 leading city.

The United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act identifies historically significant locations for anniversary activities and names Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Charleston as leading cities. Charleston is the only South Carolina city in that four-city list.

Charleston’s selection reflects its importance in the colonial and Revolutionary-era history of the United States. The city was founded in 1670 as Charles Town and became a major Atlantic port. During the American Revolution, South Carolina was a theater of military campaigns and political conflict, making Charleston relevant to commemorations of the era.

Charleston should not be confused with Columbia, the state capital, or Savannah, a historically important city in neighboring Georgia. The America250 designation is a planning category for major commemorative activity; it does not mean Charleston was the national capital or the location where the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
