Which South American country made its Rugby World Cup debut in 2023?

The story behind the answer

Chile made its Rugby World Cup debut at the 2023 tournament in France. The Los Cóndores became the first Chilean men's team to reach rugby union’s biggest competition.

Chile qualified by defeating the United States in a dramatic two-match aggregate series in July 2022. After losing the first leg 22–21, Chile won the return match 31–29, advancing on a 52–51 aggregate score. The result secured South America’s second qualification place for the tournament.

Chile played in Pool D alongside England, Japan, Samoa and Argentina. Its opening match against Japan in Toulouse on 10 September 2023 ended in a 42–12 defeat, but Rodrigo Fernández scored Chile’s first-ever Rugby World Cup try within the opening minutes.

The debut was historic even though Chile lost all four pool matches. The team became the 26th different nation to play at a men's Rugby World Cup. Uruguay had already appeared at earlier editions, while Brazil and Paraguay had not reached the men's tournament by 2023.
