Which South American country is the world's largest producer of coffee?

The story behind the answer

Brazil is the world's largest producer of coffee.

Coffee arrived in Brazil in the eighteenth century, and commercial cultivation expanded rapidly during the nineteenth century. The country's large territory provides varied climates and elevations suitable for both Arabica and Robusta coffee.

Important producing areas include Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, São Paulo and Bahia. Minas Gerais is especially prominent for Arabica production, while Espírito Santo is a major source of Robusta, also called conilon in Brazil.

Brazil's scale can cause confusion with Colombia, another famous coffee-producing country. Colombia is strongly associated with Arabica coffee and has a major coffee-growing cultural landscape, but Brazil leads the world in total coffee production. Coffee has also played a major role in Brazil's agricultural and economic history.
