Which South American country is the leading producer of emeralds?

The story behind the answer

Colombia is South America’s leading producer of emeralds and has historically been the world’s largest emerald producer.

Colombian emeralds are especially famous for their rich green color and relatively distinctive geological origin. Major mining districts include Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor, all located in the country’s central Andes. These deposits formed in unusual hydrothermal conditions associated with sedimentary rocks, helping distinguish Colombian stones from many other emerald sources.

Colombia’s dominance is sometimes confused with Zambia’s major role in the modern global gemstone market. Zambia is also a leading producer and is known for large Kafubu-area deposits, while Brazil, Afghanistan, and several African countries produce emeralds as well. Rankings can vary by year, grade, and whether output is measured by weight, value, or gem quality.

Colombia is also associated with rare “trapiche” emeralds, whose dark impurities form radial, wheel-like patterns. Those unusual stones are a geological signature rather than a separate mineral.
