Which South American country is home to the world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni?

The story behind the answer

Bolivia is home to Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat.

Salar de Uyuni covers roughly 10,000 square kilometres in Bolivia’s Potosí Department, near the crest of the Andes. It formed when prehistoric lakes dried out, leaving a vast crust of salt and minerals across a remarkably flat basin.

During the dry season, the surface appears as a brilliant white expanse patterned with natural polygonal shapes. After a thin layer of rainwater covers the salt, the flat can create a famous mirror effect that reflects the sky. The landscape has made the site a major destination for visitors and a popular location for photography.

The salt flat also contains significant lithium resources in its brine. Nearby Isla Incahuasi is known for giant cacti and fossilized coral. Salar de Uyuni is sometimes confused with Chile’s smaller Salar de Atacama, but Uyuni is substantially larger.
