Paraguay has the Itaipu Dam on its border with Brazil. The dam spans the Paraná River between Paraguay and Brazil and supports the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, operated jointly by the two countries.
Construction began in 1975, and the project became operational in the 1980s. Its reservoir and power station form one of the world’s largest hydroelectric developments by generating capacity. The dam is near Ciudad del Este in Paraguay and Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil.
Itaipu is sometimes confused with Argentina’s Yacyretá Dam, another binational hydroelectric project on the Paraná River. Itaipu’s shared ownership and location make it a major example of cooperation between Paraguay and Brazil.
