Which South American country has the capital city Bogotá?

The story behind the answer

The South American country with the capital city Bogotá is Colombia.

Bogotá sits on the Bogotá savanna in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes, at an average elevation of about 2,640 meters. That makes it one of the world's highest national capitals and gives the city a cool climate despite its location near the Equator.

The area was home to the Muisca people before Spanish colonization. Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded the Spanish settlement on 6 August 1538; it later became the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada and remained the political center after Colombian independence.

A common mix-up is confusing Bogotá with Quito or La Paz, which are also high-elevation South American capitals. Bogotá is Colombia's capital, while Cartagena and Medellín are major Colombian cities but not the national capital.
