Which South American country contains Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside Asia?

The story behind the answer

Argentina contains Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside Asia.

Aconcagua rises to 6,961 metres in Argentina’s Mendoza Province, close to the border with Chile. It is the highest peak in both the Western Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere, and it is generally classified as part of the Andes. The mountain is not an active volcano, despite its massive, steep profile.

The name is often linked to Indigenous languages of the Andes, though its exact etymology is debated. The first recorded ascent reached the summit in 1897, led by the Swiss guide Matthias Zurbriggen during an expedition organized by Edward FitzGerald.

Aconcagua is sometimes incorrectly assigned to Chile because the international border runs nearby and many approach routes use Chilean infrastructure. The summit itself lies in Argentina. Climbers face extreme altitude, cold, strong winds, and rapidly changing weather.
