Which South American city hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The Games took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. They were the first Summer Olympics held in South America and the first Olympic Games hosted in South America of any kind. Rio's successful bid was selected by the International Olympic Committee in 2009.

Events were held across several zones of the city, including Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã. The opening ceremony took place at Maracanã Stadium, while the football final was held at the same venue. The Games used venues that included the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, Olympic Stadium, and the temporary structures of the Olympic Park.

Rio 2016 was also the first Olympics held in a Portuguese-speaking country. The following Summer Olympics took place in Tokyo in 2021 after a one-year postponement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rio therefore remains the only South American host of the Summer Olympics.
