Which South African city hosts the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival around New Year's Day?

The story behind the answer

Cape Town hosts the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, a colorful parade traditionally held around New Year's Day.

The carnival is also known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar, Afrikaans for “Second New Year,” because its principal celebrations historically took place on January 2. It developed from Cape Town's enslaved and working-class communities, whose music, costumes and street processions created a distinctive cultural tradition.

Participants perform as minstrel troupes, often using brass instruments, banjos, drums, singing and choreographed movement. The event is strongly associated with the city's Cape Coloured communities and remains an important expression of Cape Town's cultural history.

Although it is often grouped with New Year's festivities, the carnival is not simply a midnight countdown. Its timing and traditions reflect Cape Town's own historical calendar. Johannesburg, Durban and Pretoria host other major South African events but are not the home of this named carnival.
