The son who appears in many Rembrandt portraits and died in 1668 was Titus van Rijn.

Titus was Rembrandt’s child with Saskia van Uylenburgh and the only one of their children to survive infancy. Rembrandt depicted him at different ages, producing images that range from intimate family studies to formal portraits.

As Rembrandt’s financial situation worsened, Titus became involved in the practical management of his father’s business. In legal arrangements, Titus could hold property and receive assets because Rembrandt himself had been declared insolvent. Titus and Hendrickje Stoffels were important figures in the household during Rembrandt’s later years.

Titus died at about 27, only months before Rembrandt. His short life is especially poignant because several surviving portraits show the stages from childhood to young adulthood.
