Which social news website has an alien mascot named Snoo? Reddit does.
Reddit is a community-driven social news site where users submit links, images, questions, and discussions. Other users vote content up or down, helping determine what appears prominently on the site. Topic-based communities, now known as subreddits, give Reddit its distinctive structure and make it useful for everything from technology and sports to hobbies and local news.
Snoo is Reddit's stylized alien mascot. Co-founder Alexis Ohanian drew the character in 2005 while he was a student at the University of Virginia. The original concept was connected to the phrase “What's new?”, which helped inspire the name. Snoo's blank expression, antenna, and simple design were intended to be adaptable across Reddit's many communities.
Readers sometimes confuse Snoo with Reddit's wordmark or with a specific subreddit logo. Snoo is the platform-wide mascot, while individual communities may create customized versions for themes, holidays, or inside jokes. The name Reddit itself reflects the idea of reading and discovering what is new.
