Which social network was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004?

The story behind the answer

Which social network was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004? Facebook was the social network founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004.

Zuckerberg began coding the service at Harvard, and it launched on February 4, 2004, under the name TheFacebook. His fellow Harvard students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes also helped establish the venture. Membership initially required a Harvard account, then expanded to other universities in the United States and Canada.

The name came from “face books,” printed or online directories that many American colleges distributed to help students recognize one another. In 2005, the company dropped “The” after acquiring the Facebook.com domain name.

Facebook is often confused with Instagram because both are owned by Meta Platforms today. Instagram was founded separately in 2010 and acquired by Facebook in 2012. Facebook itself became a major platform for social networking, while its parent company changed its corporate name from Facebook, Inc. to Meta Platforms in 2021.
